As the crow flies – the Gloucester Panorama Heinrich & Palmer

“This photographic panorama is 24 metres long and 2.7 metres high, and runs the entire length of the A & E Link Corridor. Taken from the roof of the hospital tower, it forms a 360 degree view of Gloucester and the surrounding landscape, with each metre wide panel representing one hour of the day. The static elements within the landscape like the roads, buildings and fields, all join together perfectly. The constantly active nature of the panorama, however, can be seen from hour to hour as light and shadow changes, and where cars and trains crossing the line between panels and have moved appear cut in half. The changing weather is also evident throughout the day as cloud formations come and go.

The panoramic image also has another dimension to it. Hidden within the landscape are ten objects that relate to stories told by staff and local people who use the hospital - such as a shell, toy car, or a ring. These are scattered around the photographic landscape and nestle into the detail in the image. The objects have also been placed back into the location in which they are shown in the photographic image. This means that the object could be found if a person went to the actual place.”

“As the crow flies” is intended as a snapshot of one particular day and a celebration of the old and the new coming together. The placement of the objects within the landscape echoes this idea but also acknowledges their ongoing existence in the present moment – the objects may still be there or may have been found, blown away or disintegrated.
