GRASP RESIDENCY Annabelle Craven-Jones

The ENT and Audiology project is exploring a shared interest in sound, phonetics, hearing and communication, across the educational, medical and artistic spheres. Littledean School has already begun exploring creative ways of educating children about listening and communicating, ranging from speech therapists working with staff to drummers in school. “The necessity of targeting literacy and communication development often means we don’t have the time or resources to do this kind of project” comments head teacher Linda Hay. “Simply having an artist in a small village school is beneficial, as all the children have the chance to hear how different people communicate, and the use of different language specific to different areas of work.”

Littledean is working with Tewkesbury based installation artist Annabelle Craven Jones to create artworks for the corridors of the Audiology and Ear Nose and Throat departments of the new hospital. Annabelle has been working with Year 3 children concentrating on the phonic sounds they are already using to develop literacy skills. Children have been working as architects building letters as big (or bigger!) than themselves. “The project was planned partly in response to the schools comment that the children very rarely get the chance to do large scale work ” explains Annabelle. “They have really enjoyed this, particularly carrying their big letters around.”

The final artworks will bring the phonics as a design idea into the Audiology and ENT corridors leading from central reception and waiting areas.
