GRASP RESIDENCY Clare Hudman
In early project meetings Dermatology staff stressed the importance of colour in calming waiting patients, children and adults alike, which led to the appointment of Stroud-based artist Clare Hudman, who works with stained glass. For Clare’s first day in Linden Primary school she was accompanied by senior dermatology nurse Maggie Gardiner. As well as introducing the work of both artist and dermatology nurse this was also an opportunity for education about preventative care for healthy skin through fun worksheets provided by the dermatology department.
After an introduction to glass and light boxes the class of very lively 8 and 9 year olds were involved in a range of art workshops including drama and poetry to explore colours and words that might express the sensations associated with dermatological problems, and also colours and words that might sooth and calm. These will be incorporated texturally in the final glass works.
Clare aims to create 2 artworks for Dermatology; a light box for a waiting room without a window and a window piece in one of the consulting rooms.
