'Silence makes the heart leap'
Ralph Hoyte and Steve Joyce
Funded by Gloucester League of Friends
"For the Outpatients welcome wall commission I have worked with the artist and metal worker Steve Joyce to create a wall poem, which is both informative and welcoming, as well as being a vibrant sculptural piece in its own right. The text is drawn from the diverse cultures the hospital serves, and is made from words and phrases that I have collected from those using the hospital in response to the question: 'What calls to your heart and makes you feel at home?'
The following words can be found on the two ribbons:
Ribbon 1 - starts top left
sea ripples
scent of pine drifts over
‘welcome’ (in Hindi)
purr purr purr
soo-dhawayn (‘welcome’ in Somali)
LOVE (spelt backwards)
me mam’s rice and peas
cup of tea?
A child’s smile
camel milk
hoan nghênh! (‘welcome’ in Vietnamese)
home home
silence makes the heart leap
END
Ribbon 2 – starts bottom left
we care
welcome
we share
frogs on lilypads
witać (‘welcome’ in Polish)
wagging tail
sunset over the Indus
‘welcome’ (in Mandarin Chinese)
Chocolate, mm, chocolate
carpe diem ‘(seize the day’)
‘welcome’ (in English)
smell of fresh chapattis
END
