A & E Department
"Children can obviously be in a very distressed state when they come to hospital, and anything which helps take their minds off what's happening them has got to be good."
Joanne Wiggett
Paediatric Nurse
Natasha and the children of Tewkesbury Primary School have created a series of artworks to distract and entertain within the A & E Department. These complement the theme of flowing and still water suggested by Sue Kinley’s flooring designs which run through the children’s waiting area.
Whilst other GRASP residencies could create work which educated and informed waiting children and their families, staff felt this was not so appropriate for the A & E ‘front line’, where levels of stress and anxiety could run very high.
Natasha researched the residency by shadowing A & E paediatric nurse Joanne Wiggett for a day. Joanne also came in to the school to explain the work of the department, and some of the equipment used. All the children involved showed a strong awareness of A & E, both from direct experience and through medical TV dramas!
