Ophthalmology Department
Jamie Gutch and The Milestone School
“…it is facinating to watch children with heightened – or reduced – senses and to see what affects them and in what way, and to see what they respond to most intensely. Angela showed me how the movement of a large coloured flag can provide visual, aural as well as tactile stimulation.”
Jamie Gutch
GRASP artist
Ophthalmology staff expressed a wish to work with the Milestone School, as many of the children attended clinics within the department. Milestones is Gloucestershire’s award-winning community school, serving children and families with a wide range of special needs, and from a large geographical catchment area.
Staff also suggested a mobile as an appropriate work to be experienced by the wide range of age groups using the department, with an equally wide range of visual impairment.
Jamie set up group workshops in mobile-making for each class involved. This was a way to explore balance and visibility, and also as a metaphor for each class – without everybody adding their own very different contribution the mobile could not balance and take flight.
