Draft designs (23/7/03)
More than 200 people attended an Open Exhibition mounted by Leading the Way at the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. This included the first designs for five of the hospital commissions: Sue Kinley’s vinyl floor, Andy Hazell’s ‘bubble tower’, Marion Brandis’ children’s Welcome Wall, David Watson’s footpaths and Beatriz Matud’s bedside cabinets. Overall the reactions to the designs were very positive, with many people leaving their individual comments to be incorporated into the design process. A few of these are shown below:
“I loved the ‘bubble’ [Andy Hazell] – an exciting concept and one I’m sure would interest the children. Good idea to use recycled items [David Watson]. Glass inlays look bright and attractive. The flooring [Sue Kinley] I liked particularly the ‘water’ designs. The grey background colour looked a little plain and boring, although all the other colours were eye catching.”
“Excellent creative ideas, extremely appropriate if the new ‘children’s’ centre is to be as child-friendly as possible. Only element I feel could be explored is the use of a range of tactile materials – children love ‘touch & feel’ and an area of wall or floor in the waiting are may well alleviate the tedium caused by inevitable delays in this area.”
“I feel the childrens bedside cabinets [Beatriz Matud] need to be brighter colours to create a happier healing environment and rather like coloured cubes in primary colours.”
“Bubble tower: ok. Footpaths: pattern 2 is least objectionable! Route Markers: I prefer CD marker with solar light. Ceramic Wall [Marion Brandis]: very good. Bedside display: flexibility of option B seems to be best. I like the elastic for cards. Looks very clean. Vinyl floor designs: superb.”
