Outpatients light sculpture Jason Bruges
"Starting with my idea to bring the outside into the hospital through the courtyard space, the initial sketches included mirrors and a camera obscura. This has now developed into a courtyard chandelier of light, which will respond directly to the skyscape above Gloucester. This transformation came about through consultation within the hospital. This showed that although bringing in light and views was well received, a low resolution, high-contrast version of this approach would work better, since many of the viewers would be partially sighted or visiting the adjacent Opthalmology department. Out of this came the idea of a more abstract interpretation of the sky.
"I have been liasing with the Met Office to locate the correct technology to read the light and contrast patterns within the skyscape above the hospital. I have also designed, in conjunction with a lighting company, a new Luxeon LED luminaire to work as a directional, energy efficient light diffusers which will make up the sculpture - hanging like a sky chandelier within the
courtyard.
"The sculpture will be connected to a camera pointed up towards the sky. This will produce a live digital image 240 by 360 pixels in size. This colour image will then be processed so that the hanging elements of the chandelier will take on the colours of the image, producing a 3D cloud of colour that responds to the sky above."
