Vinyl flooring Sue Kinley

"When considering ways of responding to the brief, I wanted to create a balance between calm and movement throughout the corridors and waiting areas. I decided to work with shapes, colours and patterns around the theme of flowing and still water. Overall, as designs evolved from research through drawing and photography, an organic identity has emerged, avoiding hard angles and straight lines.

"Establishing links between individual areas is important, using some recognisable elements, such as shell shapes, to help with wayfinding and orientation. I hope that there is a sense of exploration and discovery as children move around the centre.

"The scale of this project means the realisation of ideas on a scale than would not normally be possible for myself as an individual artist. This is both a challenge and an exciting way of opening up new areas for me."
